One significant development among Blender community is what can be noted at www.Blenderartists.org. Once dominated by "fan boys," it has now apparently  "matured" to accommodate level-headed artists, as can be seen in the following thread:
And it's great to see such artists showcasing their finest art through such forums. And this week's winner is one of them.

How, then, can you too qualify for this award? Please have in mind that this award is reserved for those that are on par with or that excel top notch works published by artists and studios. If such work does not appear during a given week, this award is not being given to anyone. So please submit your best  work to www.blenderartist.org or to the Member's Gallery of this site, or Contact Us to show where your work is available on the internet. It doesn't have to be a Blender render, internal or Cycles. A Vray render or any other render is fine as long as Blender was used as a part of your workflow.

Artist's Comment
About Me: 
My name is Bjørnar Frøyse, I'm 23 years old and a 3D artist/art director at Krillbite Studio, a small game developer in Norway. I've been using Blender since I got into 3D sometime early in 2006. I mostly enjoy making characters and scenes that tell a little bit about them.


About "Case Closed:"
This one was inspired by the rather grumpy expression you often see on toads, and later on in the process influenced by the style of film noir. I wanted him to be a seasoned detective who's kind of tired of it all, but he keeps going because he doesn't have anything else to go to. That, and he's damn good at his job.

Blender was the backbone of the workflow, with Zbrush used for the toad sculpt and Photoshop for most of the post-work. Everything apart from a few masks was rendered with Cycles.

The render was first made for a contest here in Norway, and even though it did very well there, I was not satisfied with how it looked. Then SSS was added to Cycles, and it was suddenly possible for me to achieve a much better result for the skin. This motivated me to push the rest of the image a few steps further as well.
