How good is Blender for modeling and rendering realistic animals? And how long would it take to get a hang of it? Please check out the comments of this week's winner.

How, then, can you too qualify for this award? Please have in mind that this award is reserved for those that are on par with or that excel top-notch works published by artists and studios. If such work does not appear during a given week, this award is not being given to anyone. So please submit your best work to www.blenderartist.org or to the Member's Gallery of this site, or Contact Us to show where your work is available on the internet. It doesn't have to be a Blender render, internal or Cycles. Any other render engine is fine as long as Blender was used as a part of your workflow.

So, it is with great pleasure that www.BlenderNews.org introduces to you the winner of the Render of the Week Award for the week of November 27, 2017: Nikita Krutov.

Title: "Mabel in the Wind"

Artist's Comment
About Me:
I have a background in mechanical engineering and had my first contact with Blender during my thesis which involved the possibilities of animations in the early stages of product development. After a short time working as a scientific assistant on the same project I've been freelancing. I have now been working in Blender for over three years and am a certified trainer on Blender Network.

About "Mabel in the Wind:"
I have initially modeled my dog to try out my 3D printer. Since I mostly have technical visualizations or models for 3D printing, I wanted to do more with it and add sculpting, texturing, fur and hair dynamics as well as a natural background. On top of that I wanted it to loop. Both the whole animation as well as the middle segments are loopable.
I took photos to serve as a reference for the shape and the fur texture. Getting the face features right and painting the texture from the photos was probably what took the longest.

Everything modeled in Blender and rendered with Cycles with 512 samples. Some textures are from Poliigon, others self-painted.
