Due to the preparation for the announcement of the Render of the Year Award 2012, the Render of the Week Awards have been postponed from early December 2012. The winning entries, however, will be announced this week onward and will subsequently be posted at the Choice Gallery 2013 as candidates for the Render of the Year 2013 Award next December.
Some object to the saying "It's the artists that counts not the tools" and justifiably so, since the quality of the tools does affect the work. Blender has been getting more and more respect as one of such tools and justifiably so, since the results it produces out of the hand of talented artists have often impressed even the most critical onlookers. This week's winning entry is also a work from a very talented artist rendered by an experienced Blender artist who have released several notable Blender tutorials.
How, then, can you too qualify for this award? Please have in mind that this award is reserved for those that are on par with or that excel top notch works published by artists and studios. If such work does not appear during a given week, this award is not being given to anyone. So please submit your best work to www.blenderartist.org or to the Member's Gallery of this site, or Contact Us to show where your work is available on the internet. It doesn't have to be a Blender render, internal or Cycles. A Vray render or any other render is fine as long as Blender was used as a part of your workflow.
So, it is with great pleasure that www.BlenderNews.org introduces to you the winner of the Render of the Week Award for the week of September 10, 2012: Ulf Lundgren & Matt Heimlich.
Title: "The Old Troll"

Artist's Comment
About Me:
I am Matt Heimlich, a 25-year-old freelance 3D generalist living in northern Virginia. 3D and FX have been my passion since 2006, and more recently have become my career as well. I specialize in character work, especially within a fantasy or horror setting. Blender is my modeling tool of choice.
About Ulf Lundgren:
Ulf is a 3D professional who has been in the field since the early 90s. With many impressive tech demos that pushed character animation and rendering to its limits in the early 2000's, Ulf became well-known for his work on movies such as Die Another Day, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, and The Golden Compass. In 2005, Ulf began building his own studio, Lost Liner, where he currently works.
About "The Old Troll:"
The Old Troll started off life as a character for a film that never got beyond the planning stages. Originally rendered in Mental Ray, it was re-purposed for the Arnold training series on FXPhD, and then rebuilt to render in Cycles. The original mesh has hair, eyebrows, fur on the cape, etc., so hopefully we will see a more complete version of it when Cycles becomes a more mature renderer in the future!
