The project initially started out as a portfolio piece but I wanted to set some goals and restrictions to keep things interesting. The main goal was to finish the project within a set deadline. I gave myself just 3 days to complete it, with the aim to further improve my project management skills and on the spot decision making. I think the interface itself is a great looking product and due to its simple build, felt that it was an ideal candidate for completing within the 3-day time restriction.
One of the biggest challenges of the project was the decals. For previous work, I’ve been able to rip the products decals as vector files from their manuals online. In this case, I was unable to do so and had to create everything from scratch within Abobe’s Illustrator. I had little to no knowledge of how to use the program, so this was such a great learning experience.
I modeled, textured and rendered the image in Blender 2.79b. I created the brushed steel material in Substance Painter, although I later replicated the same texture using Blenders procedural nodes. All compositing was done in Photoshop.
In conclusion, I am extremely pleased with how this project turned out. Although the image isn’t perfect and I can already point out several areas I could improve on, I’m still happy that I was able to stick to the 3-day deadline. This for me was the main objective.
