Amazing works created by talented Blender artists definitely have contributed to the growing interests among artists from other 3D tools. While it takes time, Blender is definitely worth mastering. Note the quality of work by this week's winner.

How, then, can you too qualify for this award? Please have in mind that this award is reserved for those that are on par with or that excel top notch works published by artists and studios. If such work does not appear during a given week, this award is not being given to anyone. So please submit your best  work to www.blenderartist.org or to the Member's Gallery of this site, or Contact Us to show where your work is available on the internet. It doesn't have to be a Blender render, internal or Cycles. A Vray render or any other render is fine as long as Blender was used as a part of your workflow.

So, it is with great pleasure that www.BlenderNews.org introduces to you  the winner of the Render of the Week Award for the week of October 21, Daniel Brown.

Title: "Adamant and Bellicose"

About "Adamant and Bellicose:"
This is a picture I've been working on for a few weeks. The scene is a composite of two separate render passes. The ships in the foreground were rendered separately from the background, which is a Cycles Earth .blend scene downloaded from Blend Swap. It has been heavily modified, with new, higher resolution planetary textures to give an even better result than before.

The foreground elements were modeled entirely in Blender. There are no image textures to speak of. Each individual hull plate is separately modeled by hand (thus why it took weeks to create this image). The font used in the ships' nameplates is a simple Katakana style font to simulate an alien script, otherwise the words are just in regular English. The poly count for the foreground is 4.5 million. It took 18 hours to render the foreground layer.

Global illumination was the result of an equirectangular background .jpg I rendered up using the Cycles Earth .blend file. This resulted in the blue glow from the bottom of the image.

Initial compositing was done in Blender, with a final composite done in Gimp. The final composite involved adding the lens-flares and grittiness, as well as a great deal of color correction to heighten contrast. The contrast was necessary as the white ships tended to blend into the bright planet background.

The ship models have rudimentary interiors. In the original, high resolution image, there are people visible walking on the hull of the lower ship. The full resolution of the image is 8000 x 10000 pixels.
