With the introduction of BMesh and Cycles render engine, Blender has been gaining greater popularity among professionals users of Blender. Why is that? You may find some of the answers in the comments by this week's winner.

How, then, can you too qualify for this award? Please have in mind that this award is reserved for those that are on par with or that excel top notch works published by artists and studios. If such work does not appear during a given week, this award is not being given to anyone. So please submit your best  work to www.blenderartist.org or to the Member's Gallery of this site, or Contact Us to show where your work is available on the internet. It doesn't have to be a Blender render, internal or Cycles. A Vray render or any other render is fine as long as Blender was used as a part of your workflow.

So, it is with great pleasure that www.BlenderNews.org introduces to you  the winner of the Render of the Week Award for the week of March 18, 2013: Jan Huybrechs.

Artist's Comment
About Me:
I am the founder and CEO of 'Another World Studios LLC,' a Los Angeles-based 3D scanning studio for VFX and Video Games. A year and a half ago, I decided to try and learn two new things: playing the Ukulele and modeling in Blender. Admittedly one has been a bit more successful than the other :-D. Today I use Blender nearly exclusively for all my modeling needs (thanks to artists who create great tutorials!). So far I have used it on (among other things) the upcoming movie “After Earth” with Will Smith, the latest installment of the “Medal of Honor” series and a couple big budget video games I can't mention just yet.

About "The Resident:"
I like to think of myself as an amateur photographer, but I am also lazy enough to not actively pursue that hobby consistently. Therefore creating the images I'd love to shoot in real life in 3D is the next best thing. I found a couple images on Google that seemed easy enough to replicate, combining aspects liked from each one.

I have fallen in love with the Cycles materials and the render engine itself. It has now become so easy to create compelling images without endless efforts or technical knowledge about lighting. The real magic happens in the node setup! I also started using the rigid body dynamics. Rather than placing dozens of tiny bits I just “throw” them around the scene which in my opinion creates a much more compelling result than particles.

After finishing the scene, I thought it required something extra. I needed something that would make the scene look more unsettling. I remembered an old colleague and friend of mine who used to freak out other employees by poking his bald head out from behind monitors or desks, so credit goes to him for that!
