Artist's Comments

About Me:
I’m Dinar Kurmakov, a freelance artist from Russia. My passion is hard surface and industrial design. I've been usine Blender since version 2.69.
But my journey to 3D began a while ago when I was playing with After Effects and Cinema 4D Lite (Cinema 4D integration for After Effects) came out. I started to learn Cinema 4D and made a few animation projects with it. When I was searching tutorials on YouTube I started to notice Blender videos in my recommendation feed. I was curious and watched a few of them. Free software? Right click selection? At that time I really liked Cinema 4D and it was easy to use. But for some reason I started digging into Blender. I don’t remember why exactly, maybe it was because of amount of available tutorials, maybe it was simple desire for something new or I just really liked it. So since then I use Blender and still really like it.

About "Goliath:"
My goal was to design all-terrain electric truck with self loading/unloading capabilities. I started with blocking out main shapes and elements - cabin, big wheels, 8 feet and 20 feet containers. I decided to make wide wheels and articulated frame steering system for good off-road performance. Design is inspired by American pickup trucks, commercial trucks and side lifters. The rear body has 2 lifting cranes (lifters) with 360 degree rotation capability. I spent a decent amount of time making rotating and moving parts because I wanted to make sure that it would work in real world. Process of making lifters and articulated system included modeling basic objects, rigging them, testing by moving and rotating, editing meshes and rigs until it worked fine for me.
All materials made by mixing grunge and procedural textures. For lighting I used Blender’s Sky Texture for desert shots and HDRIs for others. I usually do several quick renders with different lighting variations and different compositions and then simply choose shots I liked the most. Final image adjustments and color grading I did in Photoshop.
