It's interesting to note how Blender is being effectively used in some recent live action short films for its visual effects, as is the case involving this week's winner.
How, then, can you qualify for this award? Please remember that this award is reserved for those that are on par with or that excel top notch works published by artists and studios. If such work does not appear during a given week, this award is not being given to anyone. Please submit your latest work to www.blenderartist.org or to the Member's Gallery of this site, or Contact Us to show where your work is available on the internet. It doesn't have to be a Blender render, internal or Cycles. Any other renderer is fine as long as Blender was used as a part of your workflow.
So, it is with great pleasure that www.BlenderNews.org introduces to you the winner of the Render of the Week Award for the week of December 15, 2014: Fabian D'Abundo:
Title: "Colorful Sparrow" aka "My Little Friend With Feathers"

About Me:
My name is Fabian D'Abundo and I'm a 24-year-old 3D artist who currently lives in Germany. I've just graduated from university and right now I am trying to gain a foothold in the CG industry.
About "Colorful Sparrow":
The model of the bird is a result of our work on a short movie called "My Little Friend With Feathers". We were asked to create a semi-photo-realistic CG sparrow and integrate him into live action footage.
My tasks were modeling, shading and rendering. Alisia Schäfer, my fellow 3D artist, rigged the bird in Blender and created the textures in Mudbox.
We only used feather textures for the main feathers on the wings. I covered the rest of the body with a few hair-systems for the sake of convenience and to save rendertime.
Since the movie is not out yet I am only allowed to show a small fragment of the shots we did. But you can find some information under the following link:

The still render of the colorful sparrow was done by me in my free time. I wanted to practice my composition and lighting-skills.The picture took 6 minutes to render on CPU (Cycles Renderer).
