Artist's Comments

About Me:
I am currently working for a small independent games studio in Auckland. Blender for me started as a hobby back in 2000 and didn't became a career until 2012. I have watched Blender evolve over time and I am grateful to all of the many contributors into what is the greatest open source software.

About "Handplane:"
I have been wanting to try IBL/PBR shaders for a while and the recent contest on Polycount forum looked like the perfect excuse. The theme of the contest was "handplanes" set up to promote a great little software called Handplane Baker.

The model is based on a Stanley No. 26 jack plane. I was able to extract most of the dimensions from photographs by setting the Blender camera to match the rotation and focal length of the photograph and then modelling through the camera view. This is much faster than trying to work out the actual dimensions. I worked primarily from a front and rear 3/4 view. After creating my low poly model I added some bevels and subdivision modifiers to create the high res model. I was able to bake some nice tangent space maps in Handplane Baker which allows baking groups and can easily switch between tangent spaces (which can vary between different softwares).

I chose to render the final images in Marmoset because it makes everything look 20% more awesome. I also posted the project up on Sketchfab if you want to zoom in close or view the geometry wire frame. Sketchfab also produces a rather nice real time view. I had great fun with this small project and I am extremely pleased by all the attention it has received. I can list off at least half a dozen things that need fixing (you can spot them if you zoom in on Sketchfab) but I'll stay positive and say that I am proud of the low vertex count.
