Fellow artists' input can do much to improve your work, as was the work of this week's winner. What could had been an uninteresting image became a dramatic piece of art worthy of respect.

How, then, can you qualify for this award? Please remember that this award is reserved for those that are on par with or that excel top notch works published by artists and studios.  If such work does not appear during a given week, this award is not being given to anyone. Please submit your latest work to www.blenderartist.org or to the Member's Gallery of this site, or Contact Us to show where your work is available on the internet. It doesn't have to be a Blender render, internal or Cycles. Any other renderer is fine as long as Blender was used as a part of your workflow.

Artist's Comments
About Me:
I work as a hobbyist, doing personal and paid work both in 2D and 3D, which includes still images and sometimes animations. To a certain degree I also work on web design. I have been learning Blender since about six years, even though I am rather inconsistent with the time spent on graphics because of studying reasons. I tend not to focus on a particular style or subject, so I excel at none.

About "Call Me Ishmael":
Following an idea that kind of just appeared out of nowhere, I started modelling the sperm whale. I was planning for a more abstract setting, but then thought it'd be distracting. I then added the beach and sea, and after tweaking the lights and the scale with help from friends and the BA Community, this is the result. It's a little different from what I usually do, which I thought was great for practice. Also adding some emotional part to it is something I really wanted to do since my usual stuff didn't really have much in that respect.
As to how I made the foams on the beach, it's nothing fancy. It's just a plane with a static texture which I obtained by stitching together some photos. I then added an alpha channel to it and tweaked the values in Blender. But really it's just a diffuse-transparency mix.
