The first winner for the Render of the Week Award for 2017 actually comes from late December last year. Check out how this incredible CG asset was actually modeled!
How, then, can you too qualify for this award? Please have in mind that this award is reserved for those that are on par with or that excel top notch works published by artists and studios. If such work does not appear during a given week, this award is not being given to anyone. So please submit your best work to www.blenderartist.org or to the Member's Gallery of this site, or Contact Us to show where your work is available on the internet. It doesn't have to be a Blender render, internal or Cycles. Any other render engine is fine as long as Blender was used as a part of your workflow.
So, it is with great pleasure that www.BlenderNews.org introduces to you the winner of the Render of the Week Award for the week of January 23, 2017: Simon Thommes.

About Me:
I am a part-time freelancing 3D artist, mostly involved in architectural visualization at the moment, who is studying physics at the RWTH University of Aachen, Germany. I started learning Blender in my free time in school around 6 years ago and developed a focus on trying to achieve photo-realism in my 3D artworks.
About "Ear to the Ground:"
I chose "Ear to the Ground" to be the title of my project when it was almost finished. Actually I was searching for a random title to put on it, but for me this one turned out to be more suiting than one I could have made up on purpose. You may interpret its symbolic meaning as you want.
This project started out as a test for rendering textile cables and developed into something of its one, so I just went with it. To create it I was trying to organise my modeling process as efficient and intuitive as possible by dealing with most of the modeling steps by using different modifiers.
