This week, www.BlenderNews.org is happy to feature an interview with Alexandre Faiad--a Blender artist especially noted for fluid simulation.
- Editor in Chief

How did you come to know 3D Graphics, all by yourself? Or have you ever received any official training?
How did I learn? By myself, like most people in our field, I guess. Tutorials and, in my case, a lot of playing with the tools.

How were you introduced to Blender?
I met Blender because of chocolate, actually. I was trying without hope to do chocolate in Realflow, and a friend of mine told me about the simulator in Blender. In some minutes, we did what I could not in days with Realflow. And then I learned that Autodesk could not buy Blender. After trying to quit 3ds Max to learn XSI just to see Autodesk buying it, I decide to dedicate myself to Blender.

Could you tell us of some of your most memorable commercial projects?
I only worked for about one year in a full-CGI studio. So I don't have many commercial works. Besides the chocolate, the one I liked the most was an animation of a logo (tim festival, a festival here in Brasil) with Realflow. It was my beginning with fluids but the concept of the water with the music and the animated logo that the agency gave us was really cool. Having a good concept to work on is really great.

Have you ever worked on any food visualization or any VFX shots as part of your commercial project involving fluid simulation?
Mostly dental advertisement in that studio I worked. Some of them I used blender, like a toothpaste on the toothbrush or a splash.

What new feature would you like to see in Blender to make your work easier?
A lot of features! Specially more integration, but I don't see that happening. Blender looks like a lot of software put together without unity sometimes. The fluid simulator for instance, was put there by its creator and forgotten, and I guess not many people have the ability to change it. So, it just got worse nowadays and I still have to use 2.49 to simulate. It does not have communication to nearly anything elsewhere in Blender.

But lately, one of the simple things I really would like to see implemented was some easier way (drag and drop, who knows?) of changing the order of modifiers. It is a huge pain when you have many of them to just press that little buttons to make them go up or down.

Thank you very much, Alexandre, for responding to this interview. And we look forward to your future projects.
